Giant Red Snakehead (Channa Micropeltes) 10cm

As the name implies, this huge snakehead is considered one of the kings of the snakehead species, reaching a gigantic size of up to 1.8m.

Juveniles are bright red and as they mature they develop black stripes down their sides, eventually completely disappearing into a blueish-black body with a white pattern.

These fish can weigh as much as 20lb in captivity so a large spacious tank is required.

They are native to freshwater systems in southeast Asia, Thailand, Burma, Malaysia and Cambodia. They can live in low oxygen water systems due to being able to breathe atmospheric air.

We recommend leaving a gap at the surface of the water so the snakehead can surface for air. They are one of 7 snakehead species known to walk across land to reach other ponds and are expert jumpers, so we suggest a heavy tight fitting lid on the aquarium to avoid them jumping out of the tank
