From at least the 13th Century, Wild Betta were collected from Rice Paddies in Thailand and domestically bred to enhance their natural territorial aggression.
Spectators would bet on Fish fighting bouts, much like with cockfighting.
Their transformation into the colourful, flowing-finned aquarium fish we know today only began from the 19th century when they were introduced to Europe and the USA and selective breeding prioritised beautiful colouration and fin shapes.
