Female Betta Unimaculata (Betta unimaculata)

Also known as the Howong Betta or One-Spot Betta, this large wild mouthbrooding betta is native to the upper Kayan and Howong (Mahakam basin) drainages of East Kalimantan, Borneo, Indonesia. The area is remote, and some parts can only be reached by small boat. In the wild it lives in clear, shaded forest streams and headwater pools, among leaf litter, marginal plants and submerged roots. It is one of the largest wild bettas, with an elongated, muscular body far more streamlined than Betta splendens. Females stay smaller and less colourful than males, and tend to show two horizontal bands along the body, which males lack.

They will eat small fish and shrimp, and they can be territorial, so we recommend a large species tank. We recommend plenty of driftwood, rocks, plants and leaf litter to break up the tank and give hiding places, and a tight-fitting lid, as this species is an excellent jumper.
