Green Phantom Pleco (Hemiancistrus subviridis)

This striking pleco is native to Venezuela, found only in the fast-flowing, highly oxygenated waters around the junction of the Ventuari and Orinoco rivers, where it lives among rocks and boulders in strong current.

It has a light olive-green body covered in yellow to cream spots, most concentrated towards the head, giving it a distinctive appearance compared to the more commonly seen brown plecos.

Juveniles are relatively peaceful, but as they mature — particularly the males — they become increasingly territorial towards other plecos and similar bottom dwellers, so tank mates should be chosen with this in mind.

Because they come from fast, well-oxygenated rivers, we recommend strong water flow and excellent oxygenation in the aquarium, along with pristine water quality — this species is sensitive to poor water conditions and organic waste build-up.
