Armoured Shrimp (Atya gabonensis)

Also known as the Cameroon Armoured Shrimp or Giant Fan Shrimp, this species originates from fast-flowing rivers along the west coast of Africa, from Senegal down to the Democratic Republic of Congo, with a possible South American population also reported.

Despite their fearsome, armoured appearance, they are gentle filter feeders, using modified fan-like claws to catch fine particles of food drifting in the current rather than hunting or scavenging.

They are shy and spend much of their time tucked away in rockwork or driftwood, positioning themselves in areas of good water flow to maximise feeding opportunities, so are more often seen fanning from a hiding spot than out in the open.

We recommend a well-established, mature aquarium, as these shrimp rely on the fine organic particles and micro-organisms present in an older tank. A secure lid is also advised, as they can be surprisingly capable of leaving the water if given the chance.
